Shop Sessions vol.8: Tom Piper

Sound Records and Good On Paper presents the Shop Sessions....

Weekly vinyl sets featuring some of the best DJ's from across the Stroud District, Gloucestershire and further afield out of Sound Records - Stroud's independent record shop.

The series continues with Tom Piper...

Tom's first love was Reggae, growing up going to the Carnival and digging through crates in Camden and Ladbroke Grove. Trying to find the hardest, bassiest, rarest records heard at Gaz's Rockin' Blues or the Dub club on Seven Sisters' Road the night before. Dancing in the near pitch dark at Jah Shaka Sound and reliving it round your mate's house with the Technics going.
Then came youtube and ebay and playing out at parties and music bars, the odd festival, weddings. Old loud party music, soul rnb pop reggae. Hours spent in record shops from Ramsgate to Memphis with an eye for a Dennis or a Justin or a Slim or Ken, what's that Tennor saw version on the sleng teng innit.
We find a more genteel and commodious selector waltzing into Sound records this quietest of quiet Sunday mornings, mid January and it's locked down.
Chalice has arabica in it these days, more medjool than mezcal, but he's still got a few musical discs to fling your way, and the music still awakens the same thrill and movement, natural power, ticket out of here....
