This film gives viewers a taster of Theo’s photographs and the museum objects on display. In this exhibition you will encounter images of geological specimens and tropical butterflies alongside a selection of objects that have been collected by the museum over the last century. They range from a television, typewriter and revolver to animals stuffed, pickled and pinned. Some are beautiful, some slightly unsavoury, and others are frankly bizarre.

Spring Ceremonials

Screenshot 2020-05-30 at 16.29.08.png

May the 1st marks the midway point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice. It is a time of fertility and natural abundance; a marriage of sun and earth. The druids of our Celtic lineage in Britain marked this time with the fire festival known as Beltane. Over thousands of years influence and customs transformed, but these nature based celebrations lived on becoming the folk festival known as May day alive in the memories of people today. Spring ceremonials seeks to work with this symbolism, reinterpreting these ancient Druidic rituals and folk customs of Britain in a contemporary culture. To welcome in the summer and reflect upon the bountiful month of May.

Spring Ceremonials is a collaboration between multimedia artists during the covid 19 pandemic. They have explored making work together as novice filmmakers with the minimalist resources & working environment shaped by strict lockdown regulations. This is the second instalment of a growing pool of collaborative works focused on ritual, lore and the land.

Watch the live premiere on the Good On Paper YouTube channel here (or below!) at 8:30pm on Sunday 31st May 2020.

Jonny Fluffypunk: I Built A Shed

New poem and film from Jonny Fluffypunk commissioned by Poetry on Loan, April 2020.

Long live our libraries.

JONNY FLUFFYPUNK
An economic refugee from the home counties, Jonny began his ‘career’ spitting vicious political verse between bands at punk gigs until cured by a West Country shaman. Now he ‘does’ poetry that deafly fuses bittersweet autobiography, political disillusionment and surreal whimsy in an act which has established him as a firm favourite at festivals, arts centres and housing benefit offices up and down the country. Equally at home on  cabaret, poetry and alternative comedy stages and stridently anti-competition in both the Arts and life in general, Jonny is- to his own disgust- winner of countless poetry slams and has come second three times in the UK National All-Stars slam. He has two volumes of poetry, prose and threadbare philosophy- ‘The Sustainable Nihilists’ Handbook’ and ‘Poundland Rimbaud’- out on the Burning Eye imprint, and his solo no-fi stand-up spoken word show ‘Man Up, Jonny Fluffypunk- One Man’s Struggle with Late-Onset Responsibility’ spent 2015 touring around the garden sheds, allotments and summer houses of Britain in a blatant championing of homespun DIY culture. A new show, tentatively entitled ‘How I Came To Be Where I Never Was’, is in development, and work-in-progress shows have been very favourably received.

Elvis McGonagall - What A State!

A brand new poem by Elvis McGonagall…

Elvis McGonagall
Stand-up poet, comedian and broadcaster, armchair revolutionary and walking shortbread tin, Elvis McGonagall resides at The Graceland Caravan Park somewhere in the back of beyond where he scribbles satirical verse whilst drinking malt whisky and listening to Johnny Cash. Two series of his sitcom “Elvis McGonagall Takes A Look On The Bright Side” have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 where he appears regularly as well as popping up occasionally on the television. A collection of his poems from 2003 to 2017 entitled “Viva Loch Lomond!” was published by Burning Eye Books in 2017. A second volume entitled “Complete and Utter Cult” is scheduled for publication in 2020. A deftly witty wordsmith, sharp and subversive but not afraid to be plain daft, Elvis has been spitting his scurrilous diatribes against the powers that be since 2003. And look at the state of the world now. So that’s 16 years of futile ranting. Elvis McGonagall is huge in North Korea. He has suffered for his poetry. Now it’s your turn.

Learning Through Theatre: The Breath of Love

A shortened version of Learning Through Theatre’s current show, The Breath of Love performed in Feb 2020 at the Sands Film Studios, London in their purpose built, music hall style theatre as part of Barry Grantham's 4th London Commedia Festival.

Learning Through Theatre
A Stroud based educational theatre company, specialising in Commedia dell’Arte, a 16th century Italian theatre style that featured stock characters, half masks, physical comic gags (lazzi), rehearsed sequences and dialogue improvised around a structured plot outline (canovaccio). As a natural progression from this genre, they also teach physical comedy: farce, slapstick and bouffon, as well as expressionist theatre. In 2015, in response to demand, they began producing Commedia dell’Arte shows that would be accessible and affordable to schools. Their aim is to enable students to experience and learn about this age-old form, first-hand by watching an authentic Renaissance-style troupe present commedia in action.

Simon McCorry: Pieces of Mind

Live YouTube premiere of the film to the brand new track Pieces of Mind by Simon McCorry as part of the Good On Paper TV series….

“Pieces of Mind grew out of setting myself a task to create a whole track using just one analogue mono synth, a Dreadbox Erebus. So all drum, pad, lead and bass sounds come from this one unit. It is also an evocation of earlier memories of wandering around London after a warehouse party before dawn and to the music that I listened and danced to in my twenties. That magic time after the stragglers from the night going home and before the first shift of the rush hour, joggers and dog walkers made their appearance. The people I hung out with would have either got a night bus or a taxi if they were feeling rich. I would walk. Sometimes just a couple of miles, sometimes much further taking detours to take in the freshness of the morning and the calmness before the madness that was the city when it came to life.

Sound would be very clear and more distinct than it would be during the day, the background roar of traffic and people was not there to take the edge off things and make it all mud. Sound played tricks and one sound would become another, a train running across tracks on the the North London Line would be come the dull thud of a dance beat from some after party, a car passing on a street running alongside a park a few hundred meters away would become a wave crashing on a sandy distant beach. And the sounds and rhythms would come together to become part in a larger whole. I learnt a lot at that time about listening, a lot about how the brain (or soul?) would synthesise disparate elements into a unity, if left to believe that they were part of a larger whole. There was a magic in that. And from that I learnt a lot about music and the music that I would make. Pieces of Mind is not so much a change of direction as an exploration of the same ideas this time with an analogue synth, recognisable particles of rhythms, basslines and melodies.

Originally I wanted the footage in the film to be catching that time in London just before dawn. Obviously with current circumstances that is a bit impossible. I decided to think about what is around me now in the same way and with the same feeling. I live in a small village overlooking Stroud on the edge of woods. It’s the first place I’ve lived where my heart goes 'oh wow, I live there' and it still does over 15 years later. Time lapses do interesting things with time and show processes and patterns we are not aware of normally. Also they marry up instances in different ways. A short shutter speed with large intervals creates a staccato feel that is slightly manic and anxious making; lots of snapshots of time married together with large chunks missing. Lengthen the shutter speed and you are no longer getting instances or fragments. Time becomes smeared and smudged, and truly condensed, giving a liquid ethereal feel changing the emotion with which we view the process filmed. Fundamentally it is about beauty and a feeling of awe with the everyday around us, whether its a sunrise, clouds forming, smoke from a factory, lights turning on and off in a town on the opposite side of the valley or the play of shadows as the sun moves across the sky….”

This Is Purgatory

This Is Purgatory was filmed by Jimmy Edmonds for Random Stroud, an arts project in which 24 artists were invited to respond to randomly selected map references in the Stroud Valleys area of Gloucestershire, England. Jimmy’s map reference was Purgatory Wood a small copse just to the south east of Swift’s Hill in the Slad Valley. But what starts out as an attempt to find out why Purgatory Wood is so called quickly becomes a fascinating series of character studies and a reflection on life now and the life hereafter.

"This Is Purgatory’ is a very funny and wonderfully human film where Jimmy dips into various people’s lives asking them what they think purgatory is, and in so doing explores a range of attitudes to death. Purgatory in a local context is a small wood near Slad in the Stroud Valleys, Gloucestershire. Throughout the film we have recurring glimpses of the wood, rustling, cracking, moving in the wind, a timeless picture of nature doing its thing, the continuum of life, the seasons, continual birth and death. The ‘characters’ in the documentary all speak their own wisdom, and the audience watching the film chortle at the individual beauty of their attitudes to death."

Jimmy Edmonds:
Filmmaker, editor and photographer Jimmy Edmonds is a Winston Churchill Fellow and BAFTA award-winning filmmaker. He has several critically acclaimed documentaries to his name.
Jimmy’s life changed forever when he lost his 22-year-old son, Joshua, in 2011. Alongside his wife, fellow filmmaker Jane Harris, Jimmy co-founded and runs The Good Grief Project, which makes inspirational and uplifting films about grief and seeks to help others find creative expressions of their own grief.
